Zoe Saldana On Sexism: “It’s Very Hard Being A Woman In A Man’s World”

Zoe Saldana talked to Manhattan magazine about what it’s like to be a woman in Hollywood and beyond. She said:

“It’s very hard being a woman in a man’s world, and I recognized it was a man’s world even when I was a kid. It’s an inequality and injustice that drove me crazy, and which I always spoke out against – and I’ve always been outspoken.”

She explained that this awareness of sexism influences the roles that she chooses to play:

“I’m known for being selective in parts I either pick or pursue, and what matters most is that they be good female roles where the character isn’t cardboard or objectified, and where there’s real substance. No generic girlfriend or wife, and no sexy bombshell. Enough of that already!”

I can’t tell who I want to be when I grow up more: Nyota Uhura or Zoe Saldana. Actually, no. What I want is to see Nyota Uhura and Zoe Saldana hanging out together: exploring the universe, speaking alien languages, and dismantling sexism – all with matching winged eyeliner. Impossible, sadly, but these pictures of Saldana and original Uhura Nichelle Nichols at an event together get pretty close.

Want to be as awesome as Zoe Saldana? Maybe try ballet:

“Before ballet, I had trouble concentrating, and I wouldn’t even try to concentrate on things I wasn’t interested in. The barre, the piano, the breathing – they calmed and centred me, and allowed me to learn lessons physically, which is how I learn best.”

This is basically what I look like when I think about how cool Zoe Saldana is, and don’t try to pretend it isn’t you, too.
